Government keeps close watch on Hurricane Mellissa; Guyanese students in Jamaica urged to stay safe

The Government of Guyana is closely monitoring the approach of Hurricane Mellissa to Jamaica, where several Guyanese students are currently studying.

According to a release, President Dr. Irfaan Ali has instructed Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Sharon Roopchand-Edwards, to engage Guyana’s Honorary Consul, the students, and other Guyanese nationals residing in Jamaica to ensure their safety and well-being. Care packages will be prepared if necessary.

Government officials are also in direct contact with their counterparts and emergency services in Jamaica as the hurricane advances toward the island.

Additionally, President Ali has directed the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and the Civil Defence Commission (CDC) to remain on standby to provide assistance if required. The Jamaican government has been informed of Guyana’s readiness to offer support.
