A swift response by the Region Two administration followed a freak storm that struck the Lima Housing Scheme around 7:50 am on Monday. The storm damage six homes and affected about 30 residents.
Regional Chairman Devin Mohan said immediate emergency measures were implemented to protect lives and assist families. “I received a distress call from a resident and immediately went to the scene. Our first priority was ensuring everyone’s safety,” Mohan said.
He noted that the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) was contacted to disconnect electricity to prevent electrocution, while the Regional Enhancement Team was deployed to assist affected households. The Civil Defence Commission (CDC) and the Guyana Police Force (GPF) were also activated — the CDC provided relief hampers and tarpaulins, while police maintained patrols to safeguard homes. Members of the Community Infrastructure Improvement Project (CIIP) assisted with debris removal.
Mohan, accompanied by the Regional Vice Chairman, DREO, and other officers, led assessments of the damage. Two persons sustained minor injuries but were treated and discharged. “We assured all families that the Regional Administration stands with them. No one will be left behind,” he said.
Later that day, an emergency meeting brought together regional and joint services officials to coordinate the recovery process. The Regional Democratic Council (RDC) is providing daily meals to affected families, while reconstruction efforts began on Tuesday morning with support from 90 CIIP workers, Public Works staff, and the Men on Mission team, which is rebuilding the two most severely damaged homes. The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) also deployed ten skilled personnel to assist.
Mohan said a Disaster Risk Management Committee has since been established to strengthen future preparedness. “The welfare of our people remains our top priority. This storm tested our resilience, but it also showed our unity and strength,” he affirmed.
