Policewoman on bail for schoolboy’s death

Yonelle Cumberbatch, 35, a police corporal stationed at Eastville Housing Scheme, Annandale, East Coast Demerara, has been charged with Causing Death by Dangerous Driving and granted $500,000 bail following a fatal accident on the East Coast Demerara.

The incident occurred on Thursday, October 30, 2025, around 07:30 hrs on Success Public Road, when the vehicle she was driving, Motor Car PAB 214, struck 15-year-old pedestrian Navindra Mahes of Le Ressouvenir. Mahes was pronounced dead following the collision.

Cumberbatch appeared before Senior Magistrate Abigail Gibbs at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, November 4, where the charge, under Section 35(1) of the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act, Chapter 51:02, was formally read to her. She was not required to plead to the charge.

As part of her bail conditions, Cumberbatch must lodge her passport with the court and report to the police on the first Monday of every month. The case has been adjourned to January 6, 2026.
