$350M in contracts awarded to clear Le Repentir Cemetery

Ninety-eight small contracts worth approximately $350 million have been awarded to clear overgrown vegetation at the Le Repentir Cemetery.

The works, expected to last four to six weeks, form part of the Government of Guyana’s wider beautification and enhancement programme for cemeteries nationwide.

The rehabilitation of Le Repentir Cemetery had been a major concern raised during the 12th Parliament. Public Works Minister Bishop Juan Edghill had outlined several interventions that are now being implemented.

Since then, the main access and internal roads within the cemetery have been completed, along with the installation of fencing. Land clearing and drainage works along the perimeter are currently ongoing.

Minister Edghill has repeatedly expressed confidence in the government’s ability to restore and modernise the quote-on-quote “eyesore” cemetery, drawing comparisons to cemeteries in other developed countries.
