Detective Assistant Superintendent of Police Johann Henry, Officer in Charge of the Regional Police Division Six Criminal Investigation Department (CID), has been named the region’s Best Performing Policeman for 2025 and was also the runner-up for the national Best Cop award.

In an interview with Ignite News following the announcement, Henry said the recognition was an honour but stressed it reflected collective effort rather than individual achievement.

“I don’t want to put ‘I’ in the mix of this thing. It might sound cliché to say it’s a team effort, but it is definitely a team effort. Whatever we do in Region Six is a Guyana Police Force effort,” he said.

Henry, who has spent nearly nine years serving across the country’s interior regions, said his career took him through Regions One to Nine, including Seven and Eight, before assuming duties in Region Six in the same capacity.

Transitioning to Region Six came with its challenges, he said.

“It’s a bit different in terms of the culture of the people here, especially when compared to the interior. It’s vastly different. But I’ve adjusted and acclimatised,” Henry explained.

Asked what stood out to senior officers and evaluators, Henry cited management and leadership. He credited the work of his detectives and the support of commanding officers for the division’s successes.

“Myself and my team, mostly my detectives, led by our able commander, investigated and solved quite a few issues. Some main court cases that happened years back were brought up to speed, and we were able to solve many problems and bring matters closer to the truth,” he said.

Henry added that collaboration, strategic management, and a committed approach to policing all contributed to the recognition.

“You have to live it, you have to breathe it. Once you put your mind behind it and start fighting, you will succeed,” he said.

Henry noted a significant reduction in crime in Region Six this year.

“Last year we had quite a high rate of crime,” he said, adding that “This year we were able to get it down to just below a 60 per cent decrease, which is a significant step in the fight against crime.”

The award highlights the role of leadership and teamwork in strengthening law enforcement and improving public safety in the region.
