A fire destroyed a two-storey wooden and concrete house at Salton Village, Corentyne, Berbice, on Friday night, leaving the occupant homeless and prompting a police investigation into allegations of arson.
Samantha Crawford, who lived in the house, said she left the premises around 7:30 pm and travelled to Red Dragon. About an hour later, she received a phone call informing her that her house was on fire.
“When we came back, the house was already engulfed in flames,” Crawford told reporters.
Crawford said she believes the fire may not have been accidental, alleging that she was threatened earlier that day by a man who works as a horse groom and had lived at the location for more than 20 years.
“He threatened me that afternoon and said I only have nine days to live here and that he would see me get out,” she said.
According to Crawford, the blaze appeared to have started in one of the rooms of the house. She alleged the dispute was rooted in jealousy following her husband’s death.
“When my husband passed away, he had intentions that I would be with him, but I lived two years without anybody,” she said.
Crawford is appealing for justice and assistance as she seeks to recover from the loss. Members of the public who wish to help with rebuilding efforts can contact her at 610-1301.
Authorities said investigations are ongoing and further details will be provided in a subsequent report.
