OAS: Priority in Venezuela is preventing escalation, upholding people’s will

The Organisation of American States (OAS) said on Monday its priority in Venezuela is to help prevent further escalation and stressed the importance of governance based on the will of the people.

OAS Secretary-General Albert R. Ramdin said the General Secretariat is closely monitoring the rapidly evolving situation and stands ready to support a peaceful and democratic resolution.

He emphasised that all actors must respect international law, human rights, and the protection of civilian life and critical infrastructure.

“Existing institutional arrangements—including the country’s constitutional order—provide an important basis on which to build. Sustainable stability and democratic legitimacy can only be achieved through peaceful means, inclusive dialogue, and strong institutions,” he said.

He called on Venezuelan actors to act constructively to safeguard peace, the rule of law, and democratic coexistence. A meeting of the OAS Permanent Council will be convened to discuss recent developments and consider next steps.
