Police have arrested a driver who fled the scene of a late-night crash in Berbice that killed a 22-year-old passenger, authorities said on Monday.
The accident occurred around 11:00 pm on Sunday on the #36 Public Road, Corentyne, when a car travelling south at an alleged high rate of speed lost control, struck a Guyana Power and Light utility pole and then collided with a parked vehicle on a concrete bridge, police said.
The victim, Lakhram Etwaroo of #35 Village, Corentyne, was a passenger in the car and was taken to the Port Mourant Public Hospital, where he later died from his injuries. His body was taken to a funeral home and is awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Police identified the driver as Sumesh James and said he fled after the crash but was later arrested. He remains in custody and is assisting with the investigation.
Etwaroo’s mother, Latchmin Etwaroo, said her son had left home earlier that day to attend a birthday party and returned briefly before heading out again.
A relative said the family learned of the crash through a phone call and was told at the hospital that Etwaroo had been pronounced dead on arrival.
Police said investigations are continuing.
