94 schools in Region Two undergoing major rehabilitation

Ninety-four schools across Region Two are undergoing major rehabilitation works as part of a government programme aimed at improving safety and learning conditions for students and teachers, regional education officials said.
Chairperson of the Regional Education Committee, Parmanand Singh, provided the update during the first statutory meeting of the Regional Democratic Council (RDC), noting that construction activities are currently ongoing at all sites.
The rehabilitation programme forms part of the government’s broader effort to strengthen education infrastructure and ensure learners have access to safe, modern and supportive environments that promote academic achievement and well-being, Singh said.
The scope of works includes the upgrading and expansion of classrooms, repairs to roofs and floors, improved ventilation and lighting, and upgrades to washroom and sanitation facilities to meet health and safety standards. Additional interventions include structural repairs, fencing, painting, and electrical and plumbing works.
The 94 projects span nursery, primary and secondary schools, as well as student dormitories and teachers’ living quarters across the region, ensuring improvements to both instructional spaces and accommodation facilities.
Singh said all projects are being closely monitored by the Regional Education Department and Education Officers to ensure compliance with approved specifications, timelines and quality standards, with monitoring and reporting mechanisms in place to ensure accountability.
The rehabilitation works are part of a wider strategy to strengthen the education sector in Region Two by promoting safe, inclusive and learner-friendly school environments.
