Family of youth killed in Corentyne accident calls for justice

The family of 21-year-old Jagdeo Bhimsingh, an overseas-based Guyanese from Number 63 Village, Corentyne, is calling for justice following his death in a road accident on Monday along the Number 64 Public Road.
According to police reports, the collision involved a motorcycle driven by Bhimsingh and a car operated by a 60-year-old resident of Number 64 Village. Police stated that Bhimsingh was allegedly speeding, unlicensed, and not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. The driver of the car was reportedly turning into the path of the motorcycle when the collision occurred.
Bhimsingh was taken to the Number 75 Regional Hospital in an unconscious condition, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. A breathalyser test on the car driver reportedly showed readings of 7 and 8 micrograms.
However, Bhimsingh’s family disputes the police account. CCTV footage reportedly shows him wearing a helmet, and an overseas driver’s licence produced by relatives suggests he was licensed.

His cousin, Mattew Gangapersaud, said police did not properly detain the driver at the scene. “The man made a U-turn and killed the boy, young boy just starting his life,” Gangapersaud said.
Bhimsingh’s father, Motie Bhimsingh, was deeply distraught when he spoke to Ignite News. “I really need justice for my son. I can’t let somebody kill my son just like that. He came to Guyana on 10 January and was supposed to leave this week,” he said through tears.
Investigations into the fatal accident are ongoing.
