A 77-year-old pensioner, Mohadai Sankar, was killed and a 25-year-old woman hospitalised after a suspected bee attack on Friday morning, police said.
Preliminary reports indicate that Sankar, who was visiting from the United States, was at her local residence with the woman and two others when a swarm of bees, believed to have come from the roof of a neighbouring house, attacked them. Both victims sustained multiple stings.
Sankar was taken to Enmore Regional Hospital, where she died at around 18:45 while receiving treatment. The 25-year-old woman was admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation and is reported to be in stable condition.
Sankar’s body was escorted to Jerricks Funeral Home, pending a post-mortem. Police visited the scene and called in personnel from the National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute, who brought the situation under control.
Authorities said investigations are ongoing.
