Eileen Walrond recounts journey to 100

Eileen Walrond is set to celebrate her 100th birthday on Saturday, marking a milestone she says she long believed she would reach.
Human Services and Social Security Minister Dr Vindhya Persaud on Thursday paid a pre-birthday visit to Walrond at her home in South Ruimveldt, where the two shared stories and reflected on her life’s journey.
Walrond spoke about her early years growing up in Charlestown and attending Trinity Methodist Church, before later marrying, raising seven children and spending nearly 30 years as a market vendor.
She said she often told her children she would live to see 100 and is now eagerly anticipating the celebration.
During the visit, Persaud presented her with a bouquet of roses, prompting a warm response from the soon-to-be centenarian, who said she has a fondness for “plenty” roses.
An avid reader who does not require spectacles, Walrond remains mentally sharp and active, family members said.
Asked what advice she would offer younger generations, she urged them to “stay to yourself, live peacefully, and never hurt others.”
A mother of seven and grandmother to many, Walrond is preparing to celebrate the milestone with relatives and friends this weekend.
