When women and girls are empowered, communities thrive, businesses grow and nations prosper, Women’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry Guyana’s (WCCIG) Ulecia Bishop emphasised on Wednesday at the opening of Guyana Women and Girls Summit (GWAGS) 2026.
The summit, held at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre, brought together leaders, advocates and young women for a day of dialogue, mentorship and networking in observance of International Women’s Day.
Bishop, who is Director and Chair of Communications and Corporate Social Responsibility at WCCIG, said the event underscored the importance of inclusion and leadership.
“The Guyana Women and Girls Summit represents more than this gathering. It represents commitment, inclusion and leadership, and ensuring that every woman and girl in Guyana has the opportunity to reach her fullest potential,” she said.
WCCIG President Josephine Tapp said the country’s future was closely tied to the advancement of women and girls.
“As we gather in observance of International Women’s Day, we are guided by powerful calls to action, including rights, justice and action for all women and girls.
Our summit theme, ‘Safe. Seen. Supported.’ draws directly from these calls. To be safe means that every woman and girl must have protection,” Tapp said.
Organisers also set up a help desk where attendees could access information, receive confidential guidance and be connected to support services.
The summit aims to provide women and girls with a safe space to have their voices heard while strengthening mentorship and access to opportunities.
