Ryan Roberts, 33, a fisherman of Block B Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice, is feared dead following a fishing boat mishap off the Atlantic coast on Wednesday night.
The man reportedly fell overboard after a heavy wave struck the vessel while the crew was hauling in a seine net. He was pulled back aboard but is said to have sustained a broken leg.
According to information gathered, as the crew attempted to return to shore, the rough seas worsened. The boat began taking in water and capsized about five minutes into the return journey. Survivors placed the injured Roberts on an icebox to help him stay afloat as they swam toward land.
Another powerful wave then struck, separating the men in the water. When the seas calmed, the icebox had broken apart and Roberts was nowhere to be found.
The remaining crew members were rescued by another fishing vessel hours later. Roberts remains missing and is feared drowned.
Search efforts are expected to continue.
