Hope restored: Several patients receive life-changing reconstructive urology surgeries

Several patients recently benefited from complex, life-changing reconstructive urology procedures during a surgical mission led by internationally renowned reconstructive urologist Professor Kurt McCammon of Eastern Virginia Medical School. The procedures were carried out at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) as part of a specialised hands-on surgical workshop.
Professor McCammon visited Guyana in February 2026 alongside fellow reconstructive urologist Dr Nima Baradaran to improve advanced urological care at the hospital.
During the visit, several patients received procedures that are often difficult to access locally, while GPHC surgeons and medical trainees gained valuable hands-on experience and technical guidance.
Urology focuses on diagnosing and treating conditions affecting the urinary tract and male reproductive system, including kidney stones, urinary tract infections, prostate disorders, bladder problems, and urinary cancers. The specialty also encompasses complex reconstructive procedures that restore normal urinary function and improve patients’ quality of life.
Dr Rajendra Sukhraj, Head of the Urology Section, expressed appreciation to the visiting specialists for their ongoing support of surgical training in Guyana and the Caribbean, noting that such collaborations broaden local surgeons’ skills and enhance patient outcomes.
GPHC Chief Executive Officer Mr Robbie Rambaran praised the visiting team for their humanitarian efforts and emphasised the importance of international partnerships in expanding access to specialised care.
The hospital said it remains committed to strengthening these partnerships to enhance advanced urologic services and improve the quality of care for patients across Guyana.
