Two police ranks have been placed under close arrest following the death of Otis John Jordan Payne, 30, while in custody at the Cove and John Police Station.
The Guyana Police Force said its Office of Professional Responsibility has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Several police and civilian witnesses have since been interviewed, and statements obtained as part of the probe.
The two ranks attached to the station are assisting investigators. Authorities said the matter is being treated with seriousness and that all necessary procedures are being followed.
A post-mortem examination is expected on Friday, March 27, 2026. Investigations are ongoing.
