Jordan Payne, 30, of South Haslington, East Coast Demerara, died early on Tuesday while in custody at the Cove and John Police Station, police said.
Preliminary reports indicate Payne was held in connection with a domestic violence matter. He had complained of feeling unwell and was treated by a doctor at Enmore Regional Hospital before returning to the station. Payne later became unresponsive and was taken back to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
No marks of violence were observed on his body, which is at the Enmore Regional Hospital mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination. Police said investigations into the circumstances surrounding his death are ongoing.
