Olivia Solomon claimed gold in the girls’ under-17 800 metres at the CARIFTA Games in Grenada on Monday, clocking 2:10.76, but said she believed her performance could have been stronger.
“It felt good, honestly I wanted to get the record, there were some mistakes I made, but I am excited for the rest of the season. I am excited to represent my family and Guyana,” Solomon said.
Solomon also explained her race strategy, noting she aimed to stay in front while pacing herself for the final stages. “The goal was to get out and be in first, and I saw Annalissa was kicking out too. I didn’t want to kill myself in the first 100 metres, so I think going into other races I should be more confident and know my abilities,” she said.
The Guyana team is expected to return home later on Wednesday.
