Troy Alleyne succumbs to injuries from gas cylinder explosion

Troy Alleyne, a 56-year-old man from East Ruimveldt, has died after suffering severe injuries in a gas cylinder explosion at his Pineapple Street home, police said.

Alleyne died on Tuesday while receiving treatment at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, his wife, Melissa Alleyne, confirmed.

“He died this morning… ten-something,” she said.
“I was there when he died.”

He had been in critical condition since Sunday’s explosion, which occurred shortly after 02:30 hours when the family reportedly detected a strong smell of gas inside the home.

Police said Alleyne went outside to inspect a 100-pound gas cylinder when the explosion occurred moments later.
Doctors had earlier warned the family that his condition was extremely critical due to burns covering 88 to 90 per cent of his body.

“They did tell me, from the inception, that he’s not gonna make it… they say he was going to die Sunday,” his wife said, adding that medical staff had informed her early on of the severity of his injuries.

The explosion caused part of the house to collapse and sparked a fire, which was later extinguished by the Guyana Fire Service.
