Accused gas station bomber maintains he acted alone; court declines bid to free other defendants

Daniel Alexander Ramirez Poedemo, a Venezuelan national accused of masterminding the deadly bombing at the Mobil Gas Station in Georgetown, appeared in court on Monday, maintaining that he alone was responsible for the attack.
Poedemo told the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, through a translator, that the other defendants in the matter were not involved and should be released.
Acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty said the court could not grant such a request without due process, explaining that the defence must first submit a proposal to the prosecution for onward review by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). The DPP will then assess the evidence against each accused before making any determination.
The prosecutor noted that Poedemo’s admission applies only to his own case and does not extend to the other defendants.
Defence attorney Shellon Boyce requested two weeks to prepare and submit a written report to the prosecution, citing the need for translation due to language barriers. Prosecutor Mandell Moore raised no objection.
The matter was adjourned to May 20, 2026.
