Govt warns threats against CANU director will not succeed, vows full force of law

A video circulating on social media that appears to contain threats against a senior anti-narcotics official is under active investigation, the Ministry of Home Affairs said on Monday.
The ministry said law enforcement agencies are working to determine the origin, authenticity and intent of the video, adding that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure the safety and security of those targeted.
“Any threat against the life of a public official is a serious criminal matter,” the ministry said in a statement.
It said the development comes amid intensified anti-narcotics operations. The ministry noted that the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) removed more than 371 kilogrammes of narcotics from circulation in the first quarter of 2026 and disrupted multiple trafficking networks through intelligence-led operations.
However, it said this context “does not prejudice the outcome of the ongoing investigation”.
“The Government of Guyana makes it clear: intimidation will not succeed,” the statement said. “Threats against law enforcement officials will be met with the full force of the law.”
It added that efforts to dismantle organised criminal networks would continue “with resolve, coordination, and unwavering focus”, warning that no individual or group would be allowed to undermine the rule of law or threaten law enforcement officials.
