Minibus union objects to increased fares by Kitty operators

Fare increases on the Kitty minibus route have drawn pushback from the United Minibus Union, which says any unilateral change is unfair to commuters already under financial pressure.

The President of the United Minibus Union, Eon Andrews, told Ignite News on Wednesday that the union is not aware of any official adjustment to fares and would not support unilateral action on pricing.
He said any responsible transport body would be reluctant to endorse such changes, citing the strain on low-income passengers.
“And most of them may not have had any increase in wages or salaries… it’s very depressing and it’s unfair,” he said, referring to commuters and families affected by transport costs.
Andrews added that the union has engaged the Government on transport-related issues and is aware of concerns at the Kitty Bus Park, noting that it remains open to discussions to resolve the matter.
Meanwhile, a minibus driver operating at the Kitty Bus Park said rising operational costs, including fuel and vehicle repairs, are affecting drivers’ earnings.
The driver, Kalich Arranrooplall, said fares should be increased from $100 to $140 to ensure sustainability, but cautioned against overcharging passengers during peak demand periods.
