Alleyne gets 25 years without parole for murder, burial of girlfriend in shallow grave

Shaquawn Alleyne, called “Iswe,” was on Thursday sentenced to 25 years’ imprisonment by Justice Sandil Kissoon for the murder of his girlfriend, 20-year-old Shonette Dover.

Dover was reported missing in April 2021 before investigators discovered that she had been fatally shot and buried in a shallow grave at Canvas City, Wismar, Linden. Alleyne subsequently fled Guyana and was later arrested in Suriname and returned to face the charge.

The court adopted a starting point of 37 years and six months’ imprisonment before granting Alleyne a one-third reduction after he entered into a plea agreement with the State.

In sentencing, Justice Kissoon cited several aggravating factors, including the use of an unlicensed firearm, the concealment of the crime, the burial of the victim in a shallow grave, and Alleyne’s flight from the jurisdiction following the killing.

The judge further ruled that no time spent in pre-trial custody will be deducted from the sentence and that Alleyne will not be eligible for parole.
