Interim barge service to keep supplies flowing to Port Kaituma

An interim cargo arrangement has been announced to maintain the delivery of essential supplies to Port Kaituma while normal transport services remain affected, the Ministry of Public Works said.

Under the temporary measure, an open barge will be used exclusively to transport cargo and essential supplies to the Region One community, with no passengers accommodated on the service.

Loading of cargo will begin on Saturday at the Kingston Goods Wharf, with the barge scheduled to depart Georgetown for Port Kaituma on Monday at 5 pm.

The ministry urged businesses, suppliers and residents to ensure that all weather-sensitive items are securely packaged, noting that cargo will be exposed to the elements during the voyage aboard the open barge.

The service is being provided free of charge as part of the Government’s efforts to maintain a steady flow of goods to Port Kaituma, the ministry said.

The ministry said the interim arrangement is intended to support residents by ensuring critical supplies continue reaching the community until regular shipping operations resume.
