President Dr Irfaan Ali has described a claim by political opponent Dr Terrence Campbell that he had approached him to be his prime ministerial candidate in the 2020 Regional and General Elections as “completely false”.
“I never approached Terrence Campbell to be a prime ministerial candidate for me or the People’s Progressive Party/Civic. While we have had many discussions on political matters in the past, during our time in opposition, I stated to him and others that the PPP/C is the only national party and that our policies are pro-people and pro-Guyana. At no time did I make an offer for him to be a prime ministerial candidate,” the President said in a Facebook post.
Campbell had made the claim in a Facebook post on Thursday. In that post, he also claimed that he has been the subject of constant attacks from Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo and became a public enemy for criticising the government’s handling of several key matters.
President Ali, however, emphasised that Vice President and PPP/C General Secretary Dr Bharrat Jagdeo does not attack anyone but responds factually and politically to statements and issues.
“It seems that some in the country believe they can attack the PPP and its leadership without expecting a response,” the President observed.
