Keron DeFreitas, 32, of Lot 2 Ideal Road, Soesdyke-Linden Highway, died in an accident around 18:45 hrs on Friday at Hill Foot, Soesdyke-Linden Highway.
The accident involved motor lorry #GAD 5947, driven by Ovid Spencer, a 67-year-old resident of Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara and DeFreitas, who was at the time riding a pedal cycle.
According to police reports, the lorry was travelling west along the southern drive lane of Hill Foot road, while the pedal cyclist was riding in the same direction on the western side of the road, ahead of the lorry.
As the lorry attempted to overtake the cyclist, its left front portion collided with him. As a result of the impact, DeFreitas fell onto the road, where the lorry’s left front wheel rolled over both him and his bicycle.
The injured pedal cyclist was picked up by public-spirited citizens and transported to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre. He was examined by a doctor, who pronounced him dead on arrival.
A Notice of Intended Prosecution was prepared and served on the driver of the motor lorry. He is currently in custody, assisting with the investigation.
