Police are investigating the alleged murder of Umar Muqthar Jumai, called “Muggy,” a 40-year-old fisherman from Grant, Crabwood Creek, Corentyne, Berbice.
The incident reportedly occurred between 22:00 hrs last night and 08:00 hrs today at Grant 1780, Crabwood Creek.
At approximately 08:00 hrs this morning, a Corentyne labourer discovered Jumai in a drain on the eastern side of the street. He was in a seated, slumped-over position, with his feet submerged in water. The laborer alerted the neighbourhood police, and the matter was reported to law enforcement.
Upon arrival, detectives examined the body and observed a three-centimeter wound on the abdomen.
Jumai was wearing a brown shirt and green trousers. A cutlass and a ‘Rambo’ knife were found tucked in the waist of his pants. His body was subsequently transported to Skeldon Public Hospital, where Dr. Henry examined and pronounced him dead.
At approximately 15:00 hrs today, detectives interviewed the suspect, Nigel Garnette, also known as “Nancy.”
During the interview, Garnette reportedly confessed to stabbing the deceased once in the abdomen.
A video-recorded interview and a caution statement were obtained from the suspect. Additionally, a video walkthrough was conducted with him at the crime scene.
The suspect remains in custody as investigations continue.
