Education Minister Priya Manickchand on Wednesday turned the sod for the construction of a new block at the JC Chandisingh Secondary School in East Berbice-Corentyne, Region Six.

The groundbreaking ceremony marked the commencement of a significant investment in the school, with a $191.7 million extension project aimed at enhancing the quality of education for students in the region.

According to a release, the project is being executed by Urban Edge Builders Inc., which was awarded the contract through the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board, in accordance with the Public Procurement Act.

The mobilisation amount for the project is G$19.1 million, and the work is expected to be completed within eight months.

Additionally, a defects liability period of twelve months has been set to ensure any post-completion issues are promptly addressed.

During the ceremony, Minister Manickchand reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving educational facilities nationwide.

She highlighted the ongoing efforts to meet the evolving needs of students and the broader vision for school expansion.

“This is not only happening at JC; it’s also happening at schools across the country. We’re undertaking major rehabilitation and extensions to accommodate the growing student population and their needs. This is currently a close to $200 million extension, but due to the requirements of the school and input from stakeholders—including parents and the school board—we are considering an even further expansion to comprehensively address all of the school’s needs at once,” she stated.

The new block will provide additional space and modern amenities, ensuring a more conducive learning environment for students.

The expansion of JC Chandisingh Secondary School forms part of a broader governmental initiative to improve educational infrastructure across Guyana, ensuring that all students have access to high-quality facilities and resources.
