Ronald Lall, 17, the son of former People’s Progressive Party Executive and Local Government Minister Kellawan Lall, died in a fatal accident on the Eccles Public Road last Friday.

According to a police report, Lall, of Third Street, Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara, was the pillion rider on motorcycle CP 5320, which was being ridden by Sean Bourne, also 17, of Lusignan Grass Field, East Coast Demerara.

Police reported that at approximately 18:05 hrs on the day in question, the teenagers were travelling north along the western carriageway of Eccles Public Road, allegedly at high speed in a ‘zig-zag’ manner, weaving in and out of lanes and overtaking vehicles ahead of them. The rider subsequently collided with the concrete median along the East Bank Demerara corridor, causing both occupants to fall onto the roadway.

It was reported that motorcar PAJ 7247, which was also heading north and driven by a 20-year-old Police Constable from Corentyne, Berbice, was unable to stop in time due to the short distance between his vehicle and the fallen teenagers. As a result, he unintentionally ran over them.

Bourne and Lall were picked up in a conscious state by the driver of the car and public-spirited individuals and were rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre, where they were seen and examined by the doctor on duty.

Bourne was subsequently referred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where he was further examined and admitted for fractured ribs and abrasions to the body. He is said to be in critical condition.

However, Lall was discharged from the hospital by relatives and transported via ambulance to the Woodlands Hospital, where he was subsequently pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor.

His body was taken to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, where it awaits a post-mortem examination.

The 20-year-old driver of the motorcar was taken into police custody and is assisting with investigations.
