Motorcyclist dies in Garrison Road accident

Laikram Bandine, 43, of Lot 499 Fort Ordinance, East Canje, Berbice, died in an accident on Sunday.

Police in release said the accident occurred around 22:20 hrs on Garrison Road in East Canje, Berbice.

The incident involved a motor car, license plate number PAF 5919, owned and driven by Ravindra Stanley, a 43-year-old resident of Patentia, West Bank Demerara and motorcycle, license plate SLP 2, owned and driven by Bandine.

Stanley is a Police Superintendent and the Deputy Commander for Regional Division #6, stationed at the New Amsterdam Police Station.

Enquiries revealed that the motor car was travelling south along the eastern driving lane of Canje public road at a normal speed. The driver signalled left to make a turn onto Garrison Road, located on the eastern side of the road.

While on Garrison Road, Bandine who was approaching at a fast rate, lost control. His motorcycle then fell onto the eastern grass parapet before colliding with the left rear fender of the motorcar driven by Stanley.

As a result of this collision, Stanley immediately summoned the police. The motorcyclist sustained injuries to his head and other parts of his body. At the time of the accident, the motorcyclist was not wearing a safety helmet.

He was picked up in a semi-conscious state by porters from the New Amsterdam Hospital and then transported to New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where he later died while receiving treatment.

His body is at the hospital’s mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.

Stanley underwent a breathalyzer test, which registered a reading of zero. The car and motorcycle have been lodged at the New Amsterdam Police Station for examination.
