President Dr Irfaan Ali will be making a pitch for increased military collaboration with the US as the country seeks stronger defence ties with its foreign allies in the face of Venezuela’s aggression.
This is one of the topics up for discussion when the Head of State meets with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio upon his arrival here tomorrow.
During an exclusive interview with Ignite News, the President said that, over the last four years, the country has undertaken several training and joint exercises with its foreign counterparts but will be looking to increase partnerships in areas of defence.
“We are working with all our partners and allies—the US, the UK, Canada, France, the RSS—because we know that a strong partnership with the support of our allies indeed helps us from a security perspective. They are all fully committed to the sovereignty of Guyana.
“And, of course, over the last four years, we have had many joint exercises and training sessions—not for war or to attack anyone, but to ensure synergy between our partners and us. This partnership allows for the complementary role of our human capital and theirs, and for us to have access to the highest level of available training.”
It is the President’s desire to have more such training exercises in Guyana in its bid to ensure regional peace.
“So, we hope that more of these training exercises will be available to us and that there will be greater collaboration with our allies and friends—the US, France, the UK, Canada. All of this is part of our overall security infrastructure and architecture: building partnerships, enhancing cooperation, and developing a common framework for the peace and prosperity of this region,” the President said
