Residents of Number 75 Village, Berbice, and its surrounding areas are eagerly anticipating the August opening of the brand-new regional hospital currently under construction in their community.
Region Six Chairman, David Armogan, told Ignite News on Sunday at Babu Jaan that the facility is just one of many developmental projects currently under construction in the region.
He stated that later this year, the Number 75 Village regional hospital is expected to open, providing high-level medical services to the region, while the $6.2 billion, five-storey, world-class hospital in New Amsterdam is expected to be completed the following year.
Additionally, he noted that over 2,000 roads have been constructed within the region, with the US$400 million four-lane highway between New Amsterdam and Moleson Creek set to commence later this year, as the work contract has already been issued and preparatory work will begin soon.
The chairman further stated that over 50 playgrounds have been rehabilitated within the region, with 124 more still to be upgraded. Eventually, all playgrounds will be enhanced, with additional lighting planned for 22 of them to facilitate evening activities.
Most recently, the Ministry of Housing allocated more than 100 house lots to residents in the Moleson Creek and Adventure areas, Armogan highlighted, with additional lots to be provided to residents across the region.
In the area of agriculture, the region’s main economic activity, cultivated rice land has increased from 60,000 acres to 74,000 acres, demonstrating significant development in the sector. Additionally, the government has been providing fertilisers and pesticides to further boost the industry.
He noted that the two canals to be constructed, similar to the Hope Canal, are expected to address drainage and irrigation issues when completed at the Number 52 and Lancaster areas.
The Palmyra “hospitality hub” remains on the agenda, the chairman pointed out, with plans in action for the construction of a stadium, accompanied by modern hotels, malls, and other economic-boosting developments.
Armogan remarked that before the current government returned to office, Berbice’s economy had stagnated due to the closure of the sugar factories and the lack of viable economic activities in the region.
However, he highlighted the enthusiasm of Berbicians, who will benefit from the modern and progressive initiatives planned for various locations.
