The Arthur Chung Conference Centre in Liliendaal came alive with energy as the Guyana Learning Channel brought its Whiz Kids 2025 and the inaugural Whiz Kids: Teachers Edition to a thrilling conclusion on Wednesday.
Over the course of 16 episodes, students and teachers from across the nation showcased their intellect and quick thinking in a battle of wits.
When the dust settled, Skyler Gurchuran of Marian Academy emerged as the Whiz Kids 2025 champion, while Colis Dublin of New Diamond/ Grove Primary triumphed in the teachers’ showdown.
The event opened with the Whiz Kids: Teachers Edition, where Dublin faced off against Henry Brandon (President’s College) and Marcellus Cornelius (Dora Primary). In a dramatic finish, Dublin’s 100-point performance edged out Cornelius’s 95 points, while Brandon took third place with 35 points. Dublin was awarded a trip for two to Kaieteur Falls, while Cornelius and Brandon received gift vouchers for their efforts.
Then came the Whiz Kids 2025 grand finale, where Gurchuran, Michael Moore (Georgetown SDA Academy), and Jaden Singh (Enterprise Primary School) battled for the ultimate title. In the Booster Round, a rapid-fire segment that tested their speed and knowledge, Singh took an early lead with 75 points, followed closely by Gurchuran and Moore with70 points each.
As the competition advanced into the standard rounds, Gurchuran ultimately outscored his rivals with an impressive 170 points, securing the title. Singh finished in second place with 135 points, and Moore followed with 120 points. Their efforts were rewarded with tablets for Singh and Moore, while Gurchuran claimed a laptop and the Whiz Kids 2025 trophy.
Director of the Guyana Learning Channel, Anieshaw Mohamed, praised the continued growth of Whiz Kids. “Since its inception in 2021, Whiz Kids has expanded tremendously, with over 125 students participating this season alone,” she noted. She also emphasised the Learning Channel’s mission to ensure every student, including those in hinterland communities, has access to quality educational content.
Education Minister Priya Manickchand, expressed excitement for the inaugural Whiz Kids: Teachers Edition and commended the Guyana Learning Channel for executing the competition.
She also called for continued collaboration among teachers, students, and parents to advance education.
“We must never go back to where we were. It should always be an effort to push forward in a way that is student-centred, student-led, and student-friendly.”
All finalists and participants of both Whiz Kids 2025 and Whiz Kids: Teachers Edition received certificates and tokens of appreciation for their participation. The event was hosted by Ramona Luthi, with the teachers’ edition hosted by Joseph Prendergast, Whiz Kids Season Two winner.
