Guyana has sufficient evidence to initiate legal proceedings against the Mohameds

After months of engagement with United States authorities regarding information on the sanctioned Mohamed family, the Guyana government has announced that it now has enough evidence to commence legal proceedings against the business moguls.
Guyanese billionaire Nazar Mohamed and his son, Azruddin Mohamed, along with former government Permanent Secretary Mae Thomas, were sanctioned by the United States last year.
Guyana had sought information on the accused individuals after allegations surfaced that the Mohameds were smuggling gold out of the country and evading millions of US dollars in taxes from the local economy.
Attorney General Anil Nandlall told reporters today that Guyana has received sufficient evidence to enable local authorities to take action. Through an exchange of information with the US, he stated that law enforcement agencies in Guyana, along with the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA), have expressed confidence that they now possess a substantial volume of evidence to proceed.
“The Guyana Revenue Authority, I suppose, will act upon the allegations of tax evasion, while the Guyana Police Force, through its appropriate departments, will act upon other aspects of the data or evidence that they believe present an opportunity to initiate certain processes. So, that will take place shortly,” the Attorney General noted.
