Guyanese social media activist Melissa “Melly Mel” Atwell-Holder was released today on a US$7,500 bond following a two-week detention by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Atwell-Holder is currently undergoing processing related to her immigration status, as she is reportedly married to a US citizen. She was detained in New York due to former US President Donald Trump’s strict stance on illegal immigration.
Since she was not considered a flight risk and had no prior offences, US prosecutors did not object to her release on bail.
Atwell-Holder is expected to be released from the Richwood Correctional Center in Monroe, Louisiana, once her bond is posted.
