A 54-year-old woman, Mohandai Persaud of Lusignan Pasture, tragically lost her life in a road accident on Friday along the Lusignan Public Road, East Coast Demerara.
According to police reports, the incident involved motor lorry GAC 7708, driven by a 46-year-old man from Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo.
Investigations revealed that the lorry was stationary at a traffic light in the centre lane of the northern carriageway, facing east behind an unidentified motor car.
As the traffic light changed from red to green and vehicles began to move off, Persaud reportedly attempted to cross the road from north to south. In doing so, she walked into the path of the lorry, which collided with her. She fell to the ground, and the vehicle’s left front wheel ran over her.
Public-spirited citizens rushed to assist and transported Persaud in an unconscious state to the Georgetown Public Hospital’s Accident and Emergency Unit. Unfortunately, she was pronounced dead on arrival.
A breathalyzer test was administered to the driver, which showed no trace of alcohol in his system. He remains in police custody, assisting with the ongoing investigation.
