A 25-year-old man, identified as Mervin Williams, died on Friday in an accident along the ungazetted Linden–Mabura Road.

According to a police report, Williams, the driver of motor lorry GYY 815, was pinned under the vehicle after it overturned around 15:00 hrs.

The incident is being investigated by the Traffic Department of Regional Division 10.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the motor lorry, owned by Rohit Persaud of Lot 1A Area B, Industry, East Coast Demerara, was proceeding south along the eastern drive lane at an allegedly fast rate of speed. The roadway, made of asphalt, was smooth but wet due to recent rainfall, police said.

As the lorry approached a left bend, it reportedly began to slide. The driver lost control, causing the vehicle to overturn and land on its left side, trapping Williams underneath. He remained pinned until another lorry arrived at the scene and assisted in removing the vehicle from his body.

Deon Wilson, 24, a resident of Kuru Kururu, Soesdyke–Linden Highway, was the lone porter aboard the lorry. He sustained minor injuries and was picked up by public-spirited citizens in a conscious state and taken to the Linden Hospital Complex.

Williams was transported to the same hospital by police but was pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor on duty. His body was later taken to the Pensioners’ Mortuary, where it awaits a post-mortem examination. The porter was treated and later discharged.

Investigations are ongoing.
