President Dr Irfaan Ali is calling on parents to encourage their children to take advantage of the various education and training programmes being offered across the nation.

He noted that there are numerous opportunities available for young people to develop skills and/or gain employment in fields such as medicine, technical and vocational training, security, hospitality, tourism, and many other areas.

Speaking to residents of Region Six recently, President Ali outlined the benefits of some of these programmes.

“All the children with at least three subjects CXC, get them in the nursing programme. They will get a stipend whilst they are training, they will get a guaranteed job afterwards and they will have a sound resilient future ahead of them. The starting salary now for a nurse is almost $170,000.”

“Get your children registered in the Guyana Police Force, in the Guyana Fire Service, in the Army. In the police force now, very soon the starting salary of a constable will almost be more than the starting salary of a teller at the bank,” President Ali further outlined.

The government has been on a mission to improve access to education through decentralisation.
