The Ministry of Agriculture said on Thursday that all drainage and irrigation systems across the country are operational and flood-prone areas are being closely monitored in light of heavy rainfall.
Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha told local media that 15 pumps in Georgetown, as well as others countrywide, are functioning. “All sluices are currently operable,” he said in a telephone interview.
The Hydrometeorological Service on Wednesday issued a flood warning for Regions Two to Six after intense rainfall triggered localised flooding in low-lying communities.
“We are aiming to minimise flooding,” Mustapha said. “There is some minor flooding in a few vulnerable areas, but we are keeping a close watch. There is no major flooding at this time.”
The Hydromet Office said weather conditions are expected to improve later on Tuesday.
Earlier this month, the agency forecast near- to above-normal rainfall for the April to June period, warning that the transition into the long wet season could bring heavier rain from May onwards.
While April is usually a transitional month, the risk of intense rainfall events and localised flooding remains high, with implications for agriculture, water management, and disaster preparedness.
