I greet with great affection and support all workers of Guyana as they join with their colleagues in various countries around the world in observing May Day or Workers’ Day.

May Day is a propitious occasion to reflect on the heroic and historic struggles of workers worldwide who have fought tirelessly for bread, justice, and dignity—not just within the walls of their workplaces but also within the wider society.

The achievements workers celebrate today were not won without great struggles and sacrifices. These gains are the fruits of the labor movement, nurtured by working-class solidarity and propelled by working class parties and governments.

The rights and gains won by workers have led to tangible benefits for workers: improved wages, better working conditions, and enhanced living and social conditions for all.

Today we honour all workers, past and present, including those who paved the way for the rights workers enjoy presently. I assure the labour movement of my government’s support for protecting these rights. Workers have a friend, not a foe, in my government.

Given their history of struggle and sacrifice, workers need no reminder that their strength lies in solidarity and working class unity – in building bridges and not in promoting division or distrust.

Today, the workers of Guyana can look forward to a future that will guarantee continued improvements in real incomes. They can look forward to investments that generate personal, household, and inter-generational wealth. They can envision a future with assured access to world-class education and health care, along with advancements in human well-being. Workers of Guyana will continue to benefit from improvements in housing, water, sanitation, lower energy costs, better social security, transformative infrastructure and meaningful opportunities for economic empowerment.

Workers in Guyana stand to benefit equitably from our growing economy. My government will ensure that the fruits of progress are shared by all, by fostering a more inclusive and prosperous future for everyone.

On this special day, May Day, I extend my best wishes to all workers and their representative unions and associations.

Let us use this occasion not only to celebrate working class achievements but also to renew our commitment to recognizing the indispensable role of labour in national development and to ensuring greater dialogue and cooperation to secure workers’ rights and expand opportunities for working class empowerment.

Long live the working class of Guyana. Long live workers’ solidarity!
