Police are investigating a fatal accident that occurred around 14:20 hrs on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, along the Dartmouth, Essequibo Coast public road, resulting in the death of 17-year-old Yujraj Ram.
Ram, a student of the Anna Regina Multilateral Secondary School and a resident of Lot 28 New Road, Essequibo Coast, was reportedly struck by a minibus while attempting to cross the road.
According to the police statement, the accident involved minibus #BAC 597, which was being driven by a 34-year-old man from Charity Squatting Area.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Ram had just exited another minibus traveling in the opposite direction and attempted to cross the road. Reports suggest that he hesitated upon seeing the oncoming vehicle before trying to run across, at which point he was struck.
The teenager was picked up in an unconscious state by the driver and taken to the Oscar Joseph Charity Public Hospital.
Medical personnel noted that Ram suffered head trauma and was bleeding from his nose and mouth.
He succumbed to his injuries at approximately 15:20 hrs while receiving treatment.
The teen’s body is currently at the hospital’s mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.
The minibus driver is in custody at the Charity Police Station and is assisting with the ongoing investigation.
