Prominent Guyanese-Canadian lawyer and civil rights advocate Selwyn Pieters has publicly endorsed President Dr Irfaan Ali for a second term, praising his leadership style and the significant development strides made under his administration.
“You asked me why President Ali is popular — let me tell you, it’s because he genuinely cares about people,” Pieters stated in a recent video message. “Just look at the progress made in five short years: improved roads, transformative projects like the Demerara River Bridge, and real development across the country. But more than that, this is a president who picks up the phone, who connects with people directly. That level of leadership — personal, responsive, and committed — sets him apart from others who were more ceremonial in nature,” Selwyn Pieters shared in a Facebook post on Friday.
Pieters is a seasoned lawyer with extensive experience in human rights law, civil litigation, and criminal law. He has represented clients in matters involving racial discrimination and has been a vocal advocate for civil rights in Canada. Pieters is admitted to practise law in Ontario, Guyana, and Trinidad and Tobago.
His endorsement comes ahead of Guyana’s General and Regional Elections, scheduled for September 1, 2025.
